Kennesaw Helps Stamp out Hunger

The Kennesaw Post Office, citizens, local churches and volunteers help to provide food for local families in need.

The National Association of Letter Carriers, in conjunction with the United States Postal Service, conducted the annual Stamp out Hunger food drive on Saturday, May 14.

All food collected in the Kennesaw area was donated to the , operated at on Cherokee Street in Kennesaw. The church was aided in the endeavor by on Ben King Road.

The food donated by postal customers during the drive helped to stock the Daily Bread Pantry for approximately two to three months. Donna Mathews, church volunteer and co-coordinator of the effort, and Kennesaw United's Robin Harris, helped lead the effort.

The churches are left with the challenge of keeping the shelves restocked throughout the remainder of the year. Volunteers from both congregations work together to provide this service to the community.

The food pantry opens its doors the first and third Saturdays of each month to provide approximately 175 families in our community one to two weeks of food. Any additional donations of food may be made or coordinated with a representative at the pantry.

City letter carrier Keith Smith said, “I have been working with the food drive for my entire postal career (25 years), and have served as local coordinator for many of those years. We have been blessed with tremendous support from this community every year. Even as the economy has seemed to dwindle, Kennesaw has given more and more to help its fellow citizens. Thanks to you all.”

“I would like to thank Mr. Dale Black, Postmaster of Kennesaw, along with his management staff, for supporting the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. I would like to give the highest gratitude to the Rural Letter Carriers of Kennesaw. This food drive is a great success, year after year, because of them,” he said.

The success of the Stamp Out Hunger campaign is made possible through the efforts of the Daily Bread Food Pantry, the USPS and its carriers. Shiloh and Kennesaw United Methodist churches are based in Kennesaw.
