The city will kick off the Kennesaw Grand Prix series on Saturday with the third annual Swift-Cantrell Classic 5k. Community members of all ages are invited to participate in the event on Saturday, May 12, at 7:30 a.m. in downtown Kennesaw. In addition to the 5k, or 3.1-mile race, there will also be a one-mile family fun walk. Proceeds will benefit the Swift-Cantrell Foundation for capital improvements to Swift-Cantrell Park. The race is the first of six in the Kennesaw Grand Prix series. All events are run on a mostly flat course through downtown Kennesaw and benefit various city facilities and projects. Kennesaw State University unveiled the third and final phase of its new 88-acre sports and recreation park Monday afternoon—a facility which includes nine new fields, an NCAA-regulation track and a nine-acre lake adjacent to an 8,300-seat stadium. With funding from student fees, the newly completed section of the park features five synthetic-turf fields, two natural-turf fields, one intramural field, two warm-up fields and four sand volleyball courts. Georgia Tech's James White shares the Byron Nelson Award with a Texas golfer.
Harrison High alumnus James White was named the co-winner of the 2012 Byron Nelson Award on Thursday. White, a member of the Georgia Tech golf team, shares the award with Dylan Frittelli of Texas. The award goes to a college senior—or, in this case, two college seniors—based on academics, golf career, character and integrity. Good citizenship is a key factor because the winner must emulate Byron Nelson, according to the announcement from the Golf Coaches Association of America. The GCAA hands out the Nelson Award with Cleveland Golf/Srixon, the Four Seasons Resort and Club Las Colinas, the Salesmanship Club of Dallas and Friends of Golf. Kennesaw State University student athletes helped honor special needs children this month during the annual Lexi's Night presentation. The Kennesaw State softball team and in-state rival Georgia Tech teamed up for the April 4 event, in which a special needs child received a bicycle through the Alexis Kaiser Foundation. Eight-year old Alexis Kaiser, the granddaughter of Georgia Tech basketball All-American Roger Kaiser, has been battling Cerebral Palsy since birth. “The Alexis Kaiser Foundation is kind of a neat thing. It’s not real big; it’s not a huge thing. The North Atlanta Soccer Association will hold the first Coach Jay 5k this weekend in memory of Jay Ingram. The local soccer coach and physical education teacher at Kennesaw Charter Science and Math Academy was struck and killed by a vehicle while jogging in January. The Coach Jay 5k and Crocs Walk will be held Sunday, April 22, at 8 a.m. at the NASA United Quest Soccer Fields, located at 650 Hawkins Rd. in Kennesaw. The event will benefit Ingram's wife, Corinne, and their two children, Aiden and Kailyn. Following Ingram's death, more than 1500 people gathered on a soccer field and released yellow balloons into the sky to pay their respects to the 32-year-old Kennesaw resident remembered for his mohawk, school yard pranks and devotion to …

A beautiful spring day was the perfect setting Saturday for the Fit City Field Day event at Swift-Cantrell Park in Kennesaw. Councilwoman Cris Eaton-Welsh spearheaded the Fit City program and was on hand Saturday along with displays from Hybrid Impact, Big Peach Running Company, Advanced Pain and Spine Center and Farmers Market Baskets. Harrison High has hired NFL assistant Marty Galbraith as its head football coach. The school announced the replacement for David Hines, who resigned in November after a 3-7 season, on the Hoya football website. Galbraith has been a football coach for almost 40 years, most recently as the Tennessee Titans’ assistant special teams coach from 2005 to 2011, according to the Titans’ website. His only previous head-coaching stint was at Lassiter from 1995 to 1997. He led the Trojans to a record of 19-11, The Marietta Daily Journal said. Galbraith also coached defensive backs at Pope in 1994 after moving to the area to coach tight ends and special teams at Georgia Tech in 1992 and 1993.
