The Weekender: Inaugural Museum Night; Electronics Recycling Day

This weekend head to North Cobb High School for a community-wide electronics recycling event, celebrate the Southern Museum of Civil War & Locomotive History's 10th anniversary and more.

Southern Museum’s ‘Museum Night’ When: Saturday, March 23, from 4 to 7 p.m. Where: Southern Museum of Civil War & Locomotive History, 2829 Cherokee St NW, Kennesaw, GA What: The museum is celebrating its 10th birthday with an evening of family-friendly activities aimed at offering visitors a unique look at the museum and its exhibits. During the event, guests will have the rare opportunity to climb aboard the General locomotive made famous during the Civil War’s Great Locomotive Chase. Cost: $10 for adult museum members; $15 for adult non-members; $7 for children between the ages of 4 and 12. Museum members can purchase a family pack of tickets (for two adults and up to four children) for $25; the family pack is $35 for non-members. …

Celebrate Mardi Gras with a Masquerade, 5K, Jazz, Dining Specials

Celebrate Mardi Gras with the 5K Run on Marietta Square, Atkins Park’s Oyster and Mardi Gras Festival in Smyrna, Henry’s Louisiana Grill Mardi Gras celebration in Acworth, a Masquerade Ball, or a Jazz Brunch Buffet in Kennesaw.

Mardi Gras is a week away, Tuesday, Feb. 12; however, Cobb County is kicking off the festivities early with a run on Marietta Square this weekend, a meet and eat for seniors on Thursday, and music and dining events leading up to Fat Tuesday. Weekend Spotlight: Turkey Chase for a Cause [VIDEO]

Want to warm up for Thanksgiving and support a good cause? Head to the North Cobb area this weekend for the 2012 Acworth Turkey Chase.

This week's Cobb, Douglas and Paulding Weekend & Community Spotlight features a holiday themed event in the North Cobb area. The 4th Annual Acworth Turkey Chase 5K Fun Run and 2K Walk will be held this Saturday in Historic Downtown Acworth (5K Fun Run at 9 a.m., 2K Walk at 9:15 a.m., and Little Pilgrim Trot at 10 a.m.). Participants of all ages and abilities can walk, jog or run. Get a head start on that New Year's resolution to shed a few pounds. If you register on the day of the race, the cost is $30 for the timed run, $20 for the untimed fun run (ages 13 and up) and $10 for the untimed fun run (ages 6-12 years old). Running in Your Undies Help Save Lives

Cobb County resident and colon cancer survivor Dawn Gagliardi is among the hundreds of Metro Atlanta participants in The Undy 5000—a 5k race in underwear to help raise awareness for colon cancer.

The Undy 5000 5K Run/Walk to fight colon cancer will return to metro Atlanta for the third consecutive year. Cobb County resident and colon cancer survivor Dawn Gagliardi is among the hundreds of participants who will be running in their underwear to help raise awareness for the disease this weekend in Marietta. In 2002, Gagliardi was constantly plagued with an upset stomach, discomfort, bloating and extreme pain. She was told that she had Bowel Syndrome (IBS). The IBS treatments, however, did not work for her even after countless visits to the doctor's office. After her visit to a gastroenterologist and receiving a colonoscopy, she was immediately diagnosed with stage II colon cancer at just 31 years old. Along her journey fighting the …
