Kennesaw to Discuss Details of Football Program Today

The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia on Wednesday approved Kennesaw State’s request for a football program.

Six years after Kennesaw State University began its quest to launch a football program, school leaders this afternoon will formally announce plans to kick off its inaugural season in 2015. Legendary University of Georgia football coach Vince Dooley will join university president Daniel S. Papp and athletic director Vaughn Williams at today's briefing, which is scheduled for 4 p.m. today at the KSU Convocation Center, 1000 Chastain Rd. And the first 750 students at today's press conference will receive a free T-shirt, according to the school's Twitter feed. Dooley was the leader of the exploratory committee that worked to bring football to the state's third-largest university. When the team begins play in 2015, they will be part of the NCAA…

Football Coming to Kennesaw State

The university can begin a search for a head football coach.

Score one for Kennesaw State. The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia today approved Kennesaw State’s request for a football program. "Touchdown," Kennesaw athletic director Vaughn Williams said. The decision comes a little more than one month after the board decided to take Kennesaw State’s request for a football program "under further study." At the time, board spokesman John Millsaps said "the number of athletic-related fee requests being submitted by institutions is an indication that a more systematic and coordinated approach to the review of such requests is in order." Kennesaw officials, who were so sure that the board would OK their request that they prematurely scheduled a briefing to formally announce the …

Kennesaw State's Football Request Before Regents Again

The Board of Regents will consider Kennesaw State's request today.

A month after the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia decided to take Kennesaw State’s request for a football program "under further study," the school today will once again petition the board to OK its plan. Kennesaw State wants to increase athletic fees from $152 to $252 per semester to launch a football program and Title IX women’s athletic programs, according to the meeting agenda. Fee requests generally are approved during the board's April meeting, but KSU is seeking early approval so it can begin a national search for a head football coach and staff as soon as possible. The fee increase, if approved today during the board's February meeting, would be effective fall semester 2013. KSU made a similar request last …

Regents Defer Decision on Kennesaw State Football

The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia will take more time to study Kennesaw State's request.

John Millsaps, spokesman for the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia, said "it's not uncommon for agenda items to be deferred because of the regents' desire for more information. The chancellor also noted in his report to the board (which is separate from the action item in committee on the KSU fee request) that the number of athletic-related fee requests  being submitted by institutions is an indication that a more systematic and coordinated approach to the review of such requests is in order. Currently we do this for academic programs." Today was supposed to be the final step in Kennesaw State's six-year quest to launch a football program. "January 8th is finally here," KSU athletic director Vaughn Williams wrote on his …

I love UGA football, but this pipe dream for KSU is just a dream. It would take at least 20 years to develop a decent program. KSU should focus on education and forget football. Take a lesson from Emory University and forget this nonsense. I predict KSU will overtake UGA in enrollment in the future, but as far as football goes, most people don't give a HOOT about the OWLS. KSU might attract top …   more ›

Committee: Increase KSU Athletic Fee

The step is necessary to launch a football program at Kennesaw State. The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia will vote on the matter today.

The state's third largest university will learn today if it can start a football program. The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia will consider Kennesaw State University's request to field a football team. The Committee on Finance and Business recommends that the board approve President Daniel S. Papp's request to increase the athletic fee from $152 to $252 per semester to launch a football program and Title IX women’s athletic programs, according to the meeting agenda. That committee is scheduled to make its report at 4:05 p.m. Fee requests generally are approved during the board's April meeting, but KSU is seeking early approval so it can begin a "national search for a head football coach and staff as soon as possible," …

100% would attend every game. Would be so beneficial to the Kennesaw State community and the growth of the university. As the campus moves toward a more traditional university, this could be a big step forward for student life. Tailgating and everything that comes with football would create a great environment. Also would help enhance Greek life. Exciting times   more ›
