The City of Kennesaw earned 4th place in the medium-sized companies division of the Atlanta Business Chronicle’s Atlanta’s Healthiest Employers Awards. The announcement was made at an awards breakfast on Feb. 15. The city had placed 8th in 2012. Each year, the Chronicle partners with Healthiest Employers LLC, a data aggregation and analytics organization developed to help improve wellness programming outcomes. Healthiest Employers collects, measures, and compares corporate wellness data worldwide. Atlanta companies were invited to take a survey that measured workplace wellness efforts, then scored in six categories. In recognition of Veterans Day, the City of Kennesaw will honor the service of military members past and present with a complimentary lunch on Saturday, November 10, from noon to 2 pm at the Ben Robertson Community Center, 2753 Watts Drive. “We take this opportunity each year to say thanks to the men and women of the armed forces, especially those who saw combat,” said Kennesaw City Councilman Tim Killingsworth, himself a former US Marine. “Our military vets gave so much and this is one small way to acknowledge their contribution to the freedoms we enjoy.” American Legion North Cobb Post 304 is partnering with Kennesaw city officials to host the lunch. The hearing involving Mayor Mark Mathews will be held at 6 p.m. at the Ben Robertson Community Center.
A hearing is scheduled for tonight regarding an ethics complaint filed against Kennesaw Mayor Mark Mathews. Local resident David Ermutlu filed the complaint with the city clerk's office, alleging that the mayor uses city equipment for other business and that he has been facilitating meetings between his employer and the city manager. Ermutlu said that Mathews' use of his city-provided iPhone and iPad to do business for MetroAtlanta Ambulance is a violation of the city's ordinances. According to Mathews' biography on the city's website, he serves as Manager of Government Relations for the ambulance service. Thousands flocked to downtown Kennesaw for the 36th annual event.
Sunny skies and the promise of food, live entertainment, Civil War reenactments and more than 250 booths featuring homemade crafts lured thousands of people to downtown Kennesaw over the weekend for the 2012 Big Shanty Festival. Watch the attached videos and click through the photo gallery for highlights from the 36th annual event, which drew 55,000 visitors last year and event organizers estimated would attract 70,000 people this year. An expected 60,000 to 70,000 visitors will fill the streets of downtown Kennesaw this weekend for the city's 36th annual Big Shanty Festival. Festivities will include an opening parade, a flash mob performance, food vendors, more than 250 booths featuring homemade crafts, and live entertainment on two stages. The Big Shanty Festival is a collaborative effort between the city, the Kennesaw Business Association, JRM Management and an extensive team of individuals, businesses and organizations. This year's festival is presented by Superior Plumbing. As one of north Georgia's largest events, the Big Shanty Festival has grown since its humble beginnings in 1975. Community members are invited to join the Kennesaw Cemetery Preservation Committee to help beautify the city's historic cemetery on Saturday, May 5, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. During the annual Decoration Day, volunteers help maintain and improve the downtown plot. “Each year, we show our respect for those that have passed by sprucing up family gravesites, planting flowers, and cleaning grave markers,” said Mary Hagin, Committee chair and Decoration Day coordinator. “It is a day of friendship and fellowship as we honor our heritage.” Cleaning materials, except for gloves, will be supplied. In a day where technology is so prevalent and day usage is unlimited- it is not feasible to have one piece of equipment for private use and another for business. All if us have overlapping issues.
