You might be able to find help fighting breast cancer and other types of cancers at your local grocery store and fitness centers, according to the research findings of Dr. Marian Neuhouser, Ph.D, RD. Dr. Neuhouser is a nutritional epidemiologist with a background in nutritional sciences. She is an investigator at Seattle’s Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. The Cherokee Street fitness facility combines strength training, cardiovascular workouts and nutrition tips.
Hybrid Impact Fitness at 3920 Cherokee Street in Kennesaw has a unique way of getting residents fit. It's a three-prong approach and uses the word "hybrid" in its name and its philosophy, according to Hybrid marketing director Moses Waters. "Hybrid means a thing made by combining two or more different elements--a mixture," said Waters. "And we believe a true lifestyle change is achieved when we combine the three principles of strength training, cardiovascular training, and sound nutrition while using non-traditional methods." The fitness center offers personal instruction, group classes, educational seminars, and nutritional counseling. The use of TRX bands, kettle bells, bosu balls, resistance bands, yoga, and Zumba are just some of the …

Saturday's kick-off included health screenings, speakers, and sign-ups for upcoming 5K events.
Kennesaw residents came out in force Saturday to get involved in the citywide "Fit City" initiative, which encourages people to embrace healthier habits by promoting nutrition and exercise to combat obesity and improve quality of life. "We were hoping for 300 to 500 people, and we've blown that out of the water," said Kennesaw City Councilwoman Cris Eaton-Welsh, who spearheaded the kick-off, held at the Ben Robertson Community Center. She added that a database will be kept of participants, and a manual will also be assembled showing how to coordinate such a citywide effort. "We'd like to share that with other nearby communities and, eventually, have a fit Cobb County." Kennesaw resident Carol Poirier said she came to the event to sign up …

Join Patch editor Gaetana Pipia and other community members in an effort to get healthy through Fit City Kennesaw.
I was just about to indulge in a second helping of cheesy rice when the City of Kennesaw told me to put down the fork. While the city's announcement today about a new health and wellness initiative wasn't exactly directed toward me, it was definitely a needed reminder that I made a New Year's resolution to get fit—and I better stick to it. Fit City Kennesaw is a community-wide program designed to combat obesity and inactivity, according to a release from the city. The initiative will promote fitness through a number of events this year, including six 5K road races. A kick-off event will be held on Saturday, Feb. 4, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Ben Robertson Community Center. Baseline health screenings for cholesterol, weight, blood …

Patch editor Gaetana Pipia makes a New Year's resolution to get fit through the help of Kennesaw Parks and Rec.
When I look at the stretch marks that now permeate my stomach, I remind myself that this is the badge of motherhood. Those shimmery little lines, once bright red, have now faded into more earthy tones. Sometimes, they're hardly noticeable. Then, the light hits them just right, and they glisten brightly as if to remind me of their presence. Perhaps I've been too enthralled with the beauty of my 4-month-old to pay much mind to my own physical state of being. But then I look in the bathroom mirror, and there it is—my hair a mess of tangled curls matted with baby drool, and my outfit consistent of my husband's work t-shirt and a pair of sweats. A quick step on the scale provides a fatal blow to my waning sense of confidence. Health-wise, I'm …
