The “Give Burns the Boot” fundraising drive starts Friday.
Cobb firefighters will be at local grocery stores and other businesses across the county for the next three Fridays to raise money for burn survivors. The “Give Burns the Boot” fundraising drive will be held April 26, May 3 and May 10, said Denell Boyd, the spokeswoman for Cobb County Fire & Emergency Services. "Every station will go in their territory to different locations that give them permission," she said. Donations will benefit the Georgia Firefighters Burn Foundation, which runs Camp Oo-U-La, the state's only camp held exclusively for children recovering from burn injuries. The national chain is organizing a fundraiser in which up to 20 percent of its proceeds will help the former Kennesaw State University student recovering from a hit-and-run.
A national food chain is stepping up to the plate to help Emily Bowman recovery from a hit-and-run accident that left her in the hospital fighting for her life. Pizza Hut on Wednesday, May 1 will donate up to 20 percent of its proceeds to Bowman, the former Kennesaw State University student who was severely injured in the hit-and-run in Athens in February. "This is a great way for people who couldn't make it to local fundraisers to help out," said Anna Lee Strickland, a Bowman family friend who posted the message on the Bows for Bowman Facebook Page. This Sunday, April 7, the American Legion Post 160 of Smyrna will host its 25th Annual Fundraiser for Special Olympics-Cobb. The event will be held from noon to 6 p.m. at Post 160's office located at 160 Legion Drive in Smyrna. Cobb residents are invited to join the American Legion family and enjoy silent and live auctions, food, music and performances by Special Olympics Gymnastic Team. Admission is $5. Join the Lassiter High School community this weekend to support an injured high school student.
This week's Cobb, Douglas and Paulding Weekend & Community Spotlight features the Christopher Heitzman Benefit 5K Run. The event takes place Saturday morning at Lassiter High School, with proceeds to help pay for medical expenses for the injured graduate. Heitzman, who graduated from Lassiter last spring, was seriously injured in a car accident last July on Trickum Road that killed his classmate, Ryan Aschenbach, and injured another recent Lassiter graduate Tyler Seaman. Heitzman sustained a head injury and several broken bones, and will need more surgeries. The fundraiser has collected just under $40,000 from pre-registration, and is hoping to raise more money to help cover Heitzman's medical expenses. Pre-registration for the run is $20 …

It could take up to a year before Holly Springs police officer Shane Ladner and wife Meg Ladner's lives return to normal. That's according to long-time friend Julie Cassidy, who has been by the couple's side since they were seriously injured in a train accident earlier this month in Texas. Meg Ladner, Cassidy said, underwent surgery on Monday to make repairs to her pelvis, hip, and her leg. "The good news is there is no brain damage and all her vital organs are working," she added. "She’s a fighter." Cassidy said Meg Ladner's recovery will take at least a year. She noted she will stay at Atlanta Medical Center for another three months and will undergo rehabilitative therapy at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta for an additional nine months. …
