A hearing is scheduled for tonight regarding an ethics complaint filed against Kennesaw Mayor Mark Mathews. Local resident David Ermutlu filed the complaint with the city clerk's office, alleging that the mayor uses city equipment for other business and that he has been facilitating meetings between his employer and the city manager. Ermutlu said that Mathews' use of his city-provided iPhone and iPad to do business for MetroAtlanta Ambulance is a violation of the city's ordinances. According to Mathews' biography on the city's website, he serves as Manager of Government Relations for the ambulance service. Several of the city's residents gave statements advocating the reinstatement of Georgia EMS.
The man who submitted an ethics complaint against Mayor Mark Mathews earlier this month called for the mayor's resignation during Monday night's City Council meeting, which saw an unusually high attendance of about 50 people. David Ermutlu's complaint claims Mathews used city equipment for other business and that he has been facilitating meetings between his employer, MetroAtlanta Ambulance Service, and City Manager Steve Kennedy. Kennedy informed Georgia EMS on July 6 that the company had two days to stop providing service to the city due to a state mandate that Kennesaw soley use the services of MetroAtlanta Ambulance. City Manager Steve Kennedy told Georgia EMS on Friday that the company had until 12:01 a.m. Monday to stop responding to 911 calls in the city.
The Kennesaw City Council conducted a tense discussion Wednesday night about the actions of City Manager Steve Kennedy, who on Friday told Georgia EMS that the company had until 12:01 a.m. Monday to stop responding to 911 calls due to a state mandate that the city use only MetroAtlanta Ambulance Service. The council entered the session at the request of Councilman Bruce Jenkins. Mayor Mark Mathews, who is employed by MetroAtlanta, opted to sit out of the discussion, taking a seat in the audience. Kennedy was not in attendance. On Friday, Kennedy told Georgia EMS via phone call to cease responding to emergency calls in Kennesaw, which is outside of their jurisdiction. In a day where technology is so prevalent and day usage is unlimited- it is not feasible to have one piece of equipment for private use and another for business. All if us have overlapping issues.
