Video: Easy Ways to Reduce Your Winter Energy Bill (Sponsored)

Winter is coming, and not just in “Game of Thrones.” Winterizing your home can save you as much as 30 percent off your heating bill, experts say.

This article is sponsored by Home Depot: Time is money, the old adage goes, but so is a well-winterized house. Stopping air leakages can take as much as 30 percent off your heating bill, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. The first step is to do an energy audit of your house, keeping an eye out for the trouble spots. Windows and doors are obvious places to check, but also look at things like wall outlets and switches, plumbing vents and the attic hatch for leakage. Swaying curtains and light under your doors are sure signs, but you can find less obvious air leaks by using an infrared thermometer to check for temperature variations. Or use a lighted candle (carefully). If the flame moves, air is coming in. Seal the outside of …

VIDEO: Tree Lighting Tips to Showcase Your Landscape (Sponsored)

Outdoor lighting can make your home safer and show off the beauty of your property.

This article is sponsored by Home Depot: Pretty soon, we’ll have more darkness than daylight as winter settles in. Tree and landscape lighting can lift the gloom and make your house safer at night. “I think it gives you 24-hour curb appeal,” says Joe Archer, owner of Mobile Joe’s Landscaping in Alpharetta, GA. Here are five tips to get you started: -        Walk around the property and figure out what you want to emphasize with outdoor lighting. Archer likes to show off the branch structure or the tree canopy.  “It almost looks like the tree is floating,” he says. -        Try to get as much information as possible from landscapers or the Internet so you end up with results you can live with and love.  Many landscapers will give you a free…

Both J.H. and Dick Jones are totally correct, and this blatant commercial for selling polluting/trespassing lighting fixtures discredits the legitimacy of PATCH as an objective news source. First, the statement that lighting "will make your house safer at night" is utterly false---numerous studies have failed to find any safety link. Second, the enormous carbon-release of electrical generation …   more ›

Lawn Care Tips to Try This Weekend (Sponsored)

Georgia's summer heat puts a definite stress on your grass. Here’s how to care for it as we enter the fall.

This article is sponsored by Home Depot: No matter what type of grass you have, summer heat will leave your lawn struggling. If you have a warm-season grass (Bermuda, Zoysia or St. Augustine, for example), the best thing you can do right now is to roll back on the nitrogen-rich fertilizer and give your lawn a rest. “Don’t apply anything that has nitrogen in it after August,” said Lynwood Blackmon of the DeKalb County Extension. “You don’t want to encourage new growth when the grass is ready to go into a dormant state.” There’s no rest for the weary, though, if you’ve got a cool-season grass such as fescue. Now that you’ve worked hard to keep it thriving through the summer, the time has come to do everything, Blackmon said. September and …
