Crime Up in Kennesaw

The biggest jump was in property crimes, according to the 2011 FBI Uniform Crime Report, which was released this week.

Despite a national trend that shows a decline in violent and property crimes, Kennesaw saw bumps in both categories, according to the 2011 FBI Uniform Crime Report, which was released this week. The biggest jump was in property crimes, which rose from 526 in 2010 to 571 in 2011.  Property crimes, according to the FBI definition, include burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft and arson. Violent crimes, which include murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault, rose from 20 in 2010 to 21 in 2011. There were no murders in Kennesaw in 2010 or 2011. And the number of forcible rape incidents dropped from 2 in 2010 to 0 in 2011. Peruse the chart, which includes links to 2010 and 2011 data, for …

Woman Accused of Writing $131K in Fake Loans

Tracy Lorene Pratt, 48, was charged with felony theft by deception.

A 48-year-old woman is accused of writing about $131,000 in fraudulent and fictitious loans to pay off her personal debts while working at the Just Cash in Kennesaw. According to Kennesaw police, Tracy Lorene Pratt of Tyger was charged with felony theft by deception following an audit of the business, located at 2500 North Cobb Pkwy. Police said the audit revealed the money was obtained between early 2010 and June 2012. Cobb jail records show Pratt was arrested Saturday afternoon and is currently being held at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center without bond.

Kennesaw police issue tips for preventing thefts from autos.

Kennesaw police issued an alert this morning about several thefts from autos reported in the Kennesaw area over the weekend. The department listed the following tips to help prevent similar incidents: 1. Always lock your vehicles and close your windows completely. Perpetrators are forcing down windows that are left partially open. 2. The perpetrators of car break-ins often move around from one area to another, making it difficult to anticipate their next target area. Another reason so many vehicles are broken into is that people continue to leave valuable items inside of their parked cars. 3. Female Student Attacked at KSU

University officials said the attack occurred in a residence hall parking lot at about 6 a.m.

A female student was attacked by a man at about 6 a.m. today in the parking lot of a residence hall, Kennesaw State University officials said in an alert this morning. According to the statement, the Department of Public Safety is conducting an investigation into the attack, which occurred in a parking lot at the KSU Place residence hall near the student's car. The man is described as an African-American male with dread locks, wearing a ski mask, dark-colored sweater, jeans, colorful Nike tennis shoes and a dark-colored watch. He is said to be driving a silver car, possibly an older model Honda Civic. Car Break-In at Big Shanty BBQ

A vehicle in the parking lot of the Cherokee Street business was broken into overnight.

Kennesaw police issued a Nixle alert this morning about a theft from auto that occurred overnight in front of Big Shanty Smokehouse, located at 3393 Cherokee St. According to police, a white Suburban sitting in front of the business was forcibly entered sometime overnight. The driver's side door lock was destroyed and the steering column was broken, police said. Two Charged in Kennesaw Burglaries

Darrel Bates and Christopher Lucas are being held without bond on burglary charges.

Warrants were secured Tuesday for two men charged with burglaries throughout Kennesaw. Kennesaw police said 53-year-old Darrel Bates of Conyers is charged with the burglary of Big Pie in the Sky on Jiles Road. He is being held at the Rockdale County Jail without bond. According to jail records, Bates has been in the Rockdale jail since March 30 on charges of burglary and loitering and prowling. Thirty-eight-year-old Christopher Lucas of Lindale is being held at the Floyd County Jail without bond. He is charged with burglary of the Huddle House and Castrol Expess Lube on Cobb Parkway and could face more charges pending further investigation of similar crimes in the area, police said. Arrest Made in Marine's Murder

Zach Gamble died April 8 after being assaulted two weeks earlier outside a party in Smyrna.

A Mableton man was arrested Monday and charged with the murder of Acworth Marine Zach Gamble outside a Smyrna party March 25. Sean DGene Hall, 38, of the 5100 block of Huntscrest Drive was arrested at work in Cherokee County after more than a month of Cobb County police investigation into what happened to Gamble after he attended a friend’s birthday party at the Concord Crossing Apartments the night of March 24. Gamble, 34, was found lying in the parking lot of the apartment complex about 6 a.m. March 25 after a taxi hit him. The veteran of two tours of duty in Iraq had suffered severe head trauma that had nothing to do with the accident with the cab. Kennesaw Man Found Shot, Killed

Cobb police suspect foul play after finding a body in a driveway.

Cobb County police are investigating the death of a man who was found shot in the driveway of his Kennesaw home Saturday night. At 10:45 p.m., Cobb police and fire personnel were dispatched to 4026 Leicester Dr. in Kennesaw and found the man's body lying in the driveway of the house, police said. The man has been identified as 53-year-old Milton Carl Kelley of Kennesaw. The Cobb County Assessor's Office lists Kelley as one of the owners of 4026 Leicester Dr., along with Deborah McGlaughlin. According to police, Kelley apparently died from a gunshot wound. Police said foul play is suspected, and the investigation is ongoing. Armed Robbery at Kennesaw Texaco

Cobb police said a masked man used a handgun to demand cash before fleeing on foot.

The Cobb County Police Department is investigating an armed robbery which occurred Friday morning at a Kennesaw gas station. According to investigators, a masked man entered the Texaco at 3129 Cobb Pkwy., pointed a handgun at the clerks and demanded money. After receiving an undisclosed amount of cash, the offender fled the area on foot. The robber is described as a white male, between 5 feet 4 inches and 5 feet 5 inches tall and between 150 to 170 pounds. He was last seen wearing a grey hoodie sweatshirt, jeans and a black mask. Teens Arrested in BB Gun Shooting

Three young men are accused of shooting out the windows of more than 30 cars in Kennesaw, Acworth and unincorporated Cobb.

Acworth police arrested three people who allegedly shot out the windows of more than 30 cars with a BB gun Monday evening in several parking lots in Acworth, Kennesaw and unincorporated Cobb County. Two of the men are teens, with the youngest being 17. The trio, 18-year-old Andrew Morgan of Acworth, 17-year-old Caleb Fields of Acworth, and 22-year-old Christopher Kellner of Douglasville, are charged with six counts of felony second-degree criminal damage to property. The youngest, Fields, also faces a marijuana possession charge. More charges are pending against the three as more people report damage, according to the Acworth Police Department.
