The Kennesaw Dream Foundation announced it will host the inaugural Dream Dash 5k this Father's Day weekend to benefit the Kennesaw Teen Center. Founded in February 2011 by Councilman Bill Thrash, the not-for-profit center has served more than 75 students in its first year. Thrash was honored as Kennesaw Patch's Greatest Person of the Month earlier this year for his commitment to the community initiative, which provides a safe after-school environment where teens can study, receive mentorship and pursue their goals. The Cobb County Public Library System is partnering with Kutz4Kids Incorporated, a nonprofit organization, to offer a series of art workshops for children designed to help them discover their own heroes. These inspirational events will be offered during the months of June and July at various library locations, and the resulting art gallery will be on display at the End of Summer Reading Celebration on Saturday, Aug. 5, at the Central Library. The concept of the workshops, developed by Kutz4Kids founder Justin Tutt, is to empower children to see that their own hero lies within themselves. Harrison High School student Ethan Thompson took first place in the Cobb Alcohol Taskforce's annual contest to create an anti-alcohol public service announcement. Thompson's two-minute video focuses on having someone to talk to as a source of strength that provides an alternative to alcohol. Harrison's Facebook page says he had some help from his video production classmates. Thompson was recognized during the task force's live-streaming public forum at the Cobb County government building. The win earned Thompson $300.

More than 700 Cadets from nearly all Cobb County and Marietta high schools participated in the ceremony.
More than 300 people from throughout Cobb County attended a Junior ROTC Pass in Review ceremony Thursday at Campbell High School. More than 700 Cadets from nearly all Cobb County and Marietta high schools participated in the ceremony. Maj. Larry Moyers, the host school’s JROTC instructor, explained that the purpose of a pass in review is to honor the accomplishments of the cadets and the military itself. “It’s a ceremony that’s used to recognize individuals for accomplishments or for a guest commander to review the troops and see what they look like,” he said. “So it’s kind of a combination in honors.” Two students from each school were honored with either the Superintendent’s Award or the Military Officers Association Award. Kennesaw Mountain High School student Nicole Gilreath has been named a corporate-sponsored National Merit scholarship winner by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Gilreath is among approximately 1,000 high school seniors nationwide to win the award, which is financed by about 200 corporations, company foundations, and other business organizations. About 1.5 million juniors in some 22,000 high schools entered the competition when they took the 2010 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which served as an initial screen of program entrants. Scholars were selected from students who advanced to the finalist level in the National Merit Scholarship competition and met criteria of their scholarship sponsors. …

Kennesaw State University student athletes helped honor special needs children this month during the annual Lexi's Night presentation. The Kennesaw State softball team and in-state rival Georgia Tech teamed up for the April 4 event, in which a special needs child received a bicycle through the Alexis Kaiser Foundation. Eight-year old Alexis Kaiser, the granddaughter of Georgia Tech basketball All-American Roger Kaiser, has been battling Cerebral Palsy since birth. “The Alexis Kaiser Foundation is kind of a neat thing. Bullard Elementary School's Odyssey of the Mind team is heading to the World Finals where the students will match their wit and creativity against teams from other states and countries. The team has been working all year to prepare for the competition, a creative thinking program which serves kids from kindergarten through college in the United States and in 25 other countries. The students are required to develop their own theme, script, characters and props to solve one of six problems in eight minutes or less. Kennesaw State University alum and author Haley Kilpatrick will visit her former campus on Monday to lead a discussion on the ups and downs of middle school. Kilpatrick, who graduated from Kennesaw State in 2007, is the founder of Girl Talk, a nonprofit peer mentoring organization that helps middle school girls deal with the early teen years. Girl Talk currently reaches 35,000 girls in 43 states and six countries. Kilpatrick also recently released her first book, The Drama Years: Real Girls Talk about Surviving Middle School — Bullies, Brands, Body Image, and More. Mount Paran Christian School senior Preston Moore will represent the state of Georgia this Saturday during the National High School Oratorical Scholarship Contest. Moore's winning speech at the American Legion Department of Georgia contest on March 10 earned him $1300 and the chance to represent North Cobb Post 304, District Five, and the Department of Georgia at the national level.
