Team registration begins Jan. 7 and 14.
Gather your friends, family or co-workers and sign-up to play in a friendly season of softball at Kennesaw’s Adams Park. Team registration for the City of Kennesaw’s Spring 2013 season will begin on Jan. 7 for teams that participated in the Fall 2012 league, and Jan. 14 for new teams. Players may choose from two recreational leagues: Sunday afternoons or Friday evenings. At least half of the players on each team must be female. Games will begin in early March. Eleven local volunteers who made significant contributions to the Kennesaw Parks & Recreation Department over the past year were recognized by staff during an appreciation luncheon held on Wednesday, December 12 at the Ben Robertson Community Center. Each of the following honorees received a plaque: Jody Livingston, Casey Miller, Mary Mullaney, Evans Newell, Amy Oyler, Davina Pultz, LJ Slan, Ron Stebenne, Murray Stell, Kay Swanson and Dallas White. Parks & Recreation Director Doug Taylor, along with Volunteer Coordinator Kimberly Flores, welcomed the volunteers and thanked each of them for their hard-work, dedication, and creativity to helping improve the city’s parks, programs and special events. Kennesaw’s traditional pre-Independence Day Salute to America celebration will be held this Tuesday from 6 to 11 p.m. in Depot Park and on Main Street. The free event will feature live musical performances on two stages, plus one of the biggest and brightest star-spangled firework displays in North Georgia. Fans of Kennesaw's Swift-Cantrell are being asked to show their support by attending a free concert in the park featuring local bands and solo artists this Saturday. During the Rock to the Top event from noon to 8 p.m., attendees are encouraged to bring laptops, smartphones and tablets to vote for Swift-Cantrell Park in the Coca Cola “America’s Favorite Park” contest. The top three vote-getting parks will earn cash prizes, including a grand prize of $100,000. Organizers of the event will be on hand to provide instructions about voting, and vote-a-thon stations will be set up for those who don’t have smart devices. After leading the annual America is Your Park contest early on, Kennesaw’s Swift-Cantrell Park has slipped to fifth place as of 2 p.m. Monday. The park needs more votes by the July 15 deadline in order to win the $100,000 prize. Sponsored by Coca-Cola, the online contest encourages park goers across the nation the vote online for their favorite parks. America's Favorite Park earns $100,000, second place wins $50,000 and third place receives $25,000. A $15,000 grant will also be awarded at random to a park placing from 4th to 25th.
