Mount Paran Raises $16.5M for Arts Center

The school's fundraising campaign started in late 2007.

Mount Paran Christian School has more than 16.5 million reasons to celebrate. After five years, the Kennesaw school met its fundraising goal to purchase the Murray Arts Center at the corner of Stilesboro and Stanley roads. Mount Paran made the announcement on the school's website. "It took gifts of all sizes to get us to this point and each one was important," school officials wrote in a statement on the site. The biggest gift—$10 million—came in late 2007 in the form of a grant from the Stuart and Eulene Murray Foundation. An anonymous Atlanta foundation challenged Mount Paran to raise $5 million of the remaining $6.5 million by Dec. 31, 2012, according to a story in today's Marietta Daily Journal. By New Year's Eve, $16,562,291 had been …

Gingrey: I'll 'Stand Strong for Christian, Conservative, Moral Values'

The representative of Georgia’s 11th district discussed the economy, gay marriage, Obamacare and this year’s presidential race Monday night.

On the heels of President Barack Obama's stated support of gay marriage, Congressman Phil Gingrey, R-Marietta, addressed the issue during a town-hall meeting Monday night at Mount Paran Christian School in Kennesaw. “I don’t like the secularism that’s occurring in this country one bit and I think it is incumbent upon those of us [that] stand strong, to stand very strong, in regard to that and say ‘look, Billy and I believe that marriage is a sacrament,’” Gingrey said. “I’m not ashamed to say that, and I won’t be ashamed to say that, and I hope our nominee on my side of the aisle will not back away from saying that and stand strongly.”  Gingrey, who is up for reelection this fall, said he will continue to “stand strong for Christian, …

An expected 60,000 to 70,000 visitors will fill the streets of downtown Kennesaw this weekend for the city's 36th annual Big Shanty Festival. Festivities will include an opening parade, a flash mob performance, food vendors, more than 250 booths featuring homemade crafts, and live entertainment on two stages. The Big Shanty Festival is a collaborative effort between the city, the Kennesaw Business Association, JRM Management and an extensive team of individuals, businesses and organizations. This year's festival is presented by Superior Plumbing. As one of north Georgia's largest events, the Big Shanty Festival has grown since its humble beginnings in 1975. According to Robert Jones of the Kennesaw Historical Society, the event was …

Senior Preston Moore will represent Georgia in Indianapolis this weekend.

Mount Paran Christian School senior Preston Moore will represent the state of Georgia this Saturday during the National High School Oratorical Scholarship Contest. Moore's winning speech at the American Legion Department of Georgia contest on March 10 earned him $1300 and the chance to represent North Cobb Post 304, District Five, and the Department of Georgia at the national level. This weekend, 52 high school students from across the country will convene in Indianapolis at the University Place Conference Center and Hotel to compete in The American Legion’s 75th annual event, A Constitutional Speech Contest. NCCS, Mount Paran Earn Shuler Nominations

The student productions are nominated for the Georgia high school Tonys.

Musical productions by Mount Paran Christian and North Cobb Christian schools are among those nominated this week for the annual Shuler Hensley Awards. Mount Paran student Cole Weber earned a best supporting actor nomination for his portrayal of Alfred Doolittle in the school's production of My Fair Lady, while castmate Ellen Kozee was nominated for best supporting actress for her role as Mrs. Higgins. North Cobb Christian's orchestra received a nomination for the school's production of The King and I. The school won the category last year for Disney's Beauty and the Beast. N. Cobb Christian's Perfection Spoiled

St. Francis ends the Eagles' season in the first round of the GHSA playoffs, while Mount Paran reaches Round 2.

Take your pick of which tweet summed up North Cobb Christian's stunning 65-63 home loss to St. Francis in the first round of the Georgia High School Association's Class A boys basketball playoffs Saturday night: Perhaps North Cobb Christian, ranked No. 1 in Georgia in Class A, was looking ahead to an expected second-round game against second-ranked Whitefield, the team that knocked the Eagles out of the playoffs last year. Perhaps the Eagles had a letdown after completing an undefeated regular season with a Region 6-A championship win over crosstown rival Mount Paran Christian. Perhaps the regular-season schedule wasn’t rough enough to prepare the Eagles for tournament pressure. Perhaps St. Francis played its best game of the season. Or …

I think two things happened to NCCS Saturday night -- they were looking ahead to playing Whitefield this week, and St. Francis played the game of their lives...very sad to get knocked out in the first round after a perfect season...but great season anyways, guys! Just goes to show you that, on any given day...   more ›

Road Warriors: North Cobb, Harrison Win

Amber Reeves tops 1,000 points in her Warrior career, while the Lady Hoyas knock off a No. 1 seed in Savannah.

This year’s Georgia High School Association AAAAA girls basketball tournament started out just like last year’s—with Region 4-AAAAA dominating. Last year all four 4-AAAAA entrants—McEachern, North Cobb, Hillgrove and Campbell—made the quarterfinals, and the only teams that beat 4-AAAAA teams were other teams from the region and state champion Norcross. Friday night, all four 4-AAAAA teams—McEachern, Hillgrove, North Cobb and Harrison—won their first-round games against Region 3-AAAAA teams, and they’re a Tuesday-night sweep away from matching 2011’s quarterfinal quartet. While the two Powder Springs teams started at home, the Kennesaw entrants from 4-AAAAA had to take a long bus ride Friday, but it was worth it. Harrison pulled off the …

Teams Carry High Rankings into State Play

North Cobb, North Cobb Christian and Mount Paran Christian will start the boys tournaments at home.

Three Kennesaw schools will host first-round games in the Georgia High School Association state boys basketball tournaments Saturday, while one boys team and two girls teams will hit the road. Both North Cobb teams will open the state AAAAA playoffs against Bradwell Institute, and both Harrison teams face trips to Savannah. Meanwhile, North Cobb Christian’s boys will try to extend their perfect season at home. North Cobb Christian, the Region 6-A champion, carries the state’s top Class A ranking and an undefeated record into Saturday’s home game against Region 5-A’s third seed, St. Francis. If the Eagles win, they’ll likely face the No. 2 team in the state, Whitefield Academy, in the second round. Mount Paran Christian School, which lost …
