Randy Scamihorn, the freshman school board member from Kennesaw, was elected chair of the Cobb Board of Education on Wednesday, the same day that he took office. A retired Cobb school teacher and administrator with a background in the military, Scamihorn said he is "confident" he can do the job. "In the military, when you are enlisted, you learn to roll your sleeves up depending on the situation," he said. "You build the team and the team gets the job done." Scamihorn, 63, was elected without opposition to the Post 1 seat that covers Acworth and Kennesaw after his predecessor, Lynnda Eagle, decided not to seek another term. On the same day that they became Cobb Board of Education members for the first time, Randy Scamihorn and Brad Wheeler were elected to lead it. During Wednesday's organizational meeting, the board elected Scamihorn to serve as chairman for the 2013 calendar year and chose Wheeler vice chairman. They assumed their new posts shortly after receiving the oath of office, along with incumbents David Banks and David Morgan, who began their second terms. The board also voted to set its 2013 official meeting calendar, with minor changes to the dates recommended by Superintendent Michael Hinojosa. Few of Cobb County’s elected officials up for election this year have challengers in today’s election. Some had to only win the primary in July. In other cases, there never was an opponent. One contested race is for sheriff, but most predictors don’t expect much of a contest. Cobb County’s Sheriff Neil Warren is facing off today against Democratic challenger Gregory Gilstrap, whom he soundly defeated in 2008. Warren was sworn-in as interim sheriff in December 2003, following the previous sheriff’s resignation. He was first elected as the county’s 42nd sheriff in November 2004.
