The Cobb Parents site says it's not too late to change the 2012-13 Cobb County School District schedule.
Backers of a balanced Cobb County School District calendar have launched a website in the hope of changing the schedule for next school year. Cobb Parents started last week and offers a link to email the seven Cobb Board of Education members at once. The goal is to persuade them to switch from the current traditional calendar to the balanced calendar the district used in 2010-11. The board dumped the balanced calendar with less than six months’ notice Feb. 17 on a 4-3 vote, and the Cobb Parents organizers hope for a repeat in reverse. “There is a unique opportunity for Cobb County to come together to give input to the board on the 2012-2013 calendar,” said Thom Gray, a father of four, including three in Cobb County schools. “The board’s …

Cobb Superintendent Michael Hinojosa will present a new calendar committee proposal at tonight’s meeting.
It took almost six months to receive a response, but parent Tricia Knor will get it in a roundabout way when Georgia Senior Assistant Attorney General Stefan Ritter discusses open meetings and open records with the Cobb County Board of Education at 5 p.m. today in the Central Office boardroom at 514 Glover St. Knor filed a complaint June 27 with Attorney General Sam Olens regarding email messages sent using private accounts among board Chairwoman Alison Bartlett of Post 7, located south and west of Marietta; Vice Chairman Scott Sweeney of East Cobb’s Post 6; and members Kathleen Angelucci of North Cobb’s Post 4 and Tim Stultz of Smyrna’s Post 2. Senior Assistant Attorney General Russell Willard forwarded Knor’s 67-page complaint to the …

The Cobb County School District submitted a progress report Wednesday in the hope of closing the books on last spring’s inquiry by its accrediting agency. Cobb Superintendent Michael Hinojosa told the Marietta Daily Journal that the report addresses the concerns of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools bullet by bullet and should resolve the accrediting agency’s concerns. The SACS Council on Accreditation and School Improvement sent the school district a letter of inquiry on March 29 in response to public complaints, many responding to the change from a balanced school calendar to a more traditional schedule. Hinojosa’s predecessor, Fred Sanderson, responded with a letter acknowledging many problems with the county Board of …

David Banks’ proposed 1 percent bonus for all district employees dies without a vote.
The school calendar stirred emotions again Wednesday as Cobb County Board of Education members and Superintendent Michael Hinojosa debated the process of how to make a rule to create the calendar. Early in the 17-minute discussion at the board’s monthly work session, Hinojosa said he didn’t want one person to stand in the way of recommended rules. “It appears that one board member may have veto power over a rule, and I don’t want to revisit that every month. That’s why I’ve decided to do what I’m going to do,” he said. Board Vice Chairman Scott Sweeney of East Cobb’s Post 6 exercised that power last month. Facing Hinojosa’s proposal for a 29-member committee to draft calendar recommendations starting with the 2013-14 school year, Sweeney …

Superintendent Michael Hinojosa wants a committee to help enact a schedule at least nine months in advance.
The Cobb County school calendar, the issue that never dies, is back again today. The county Board of Education’s work session will include a discussion of Superintendent Michael Hinojosa’s proposal to create a process that will calm the controversy. His plan would add a three-step process to craft the two-year calendar: No such process guided the board through calendar changes and proposals this year. North Cobb’s Kathleen Angelucci, East Cobb’s Scott Sweeney and Smyrna’s Tim Stultz joined the board in January determined to overturn the balanced calendar, which was enacted in November 2009 and went into effect in August 2010. With the support of Chairwoman Alison Bartlett, whose district is south and west of Marietta, they succeeded on a …

The Cobb County superintendent laid out his plan for setting the next two-year schedule for the school system.
The Cobb County School District has a plan in the works to set the next calendar, Superintendent Michael Hinojosa told a town-hall meeting Tuesday night in Kennesaw. Hinojosa said he intends to form a calendar committee in August and seek community input before bringing a proposal to the Board of Education for the 2013-14 school year. The school board voted 4-3 in February to switch from a balanced calendar starting Aug. 1 to a more traditional calendar starting Aug. 15 this school year. It’s an ongoing controversy Hinojosa inherited when he was sworn in as the system’s superintendent in July. The previous administration under Superintendent Fred Sanderson did not take sides on the calendar, but Hinojosa said he will make a recommendation …
