Oil Painting Instruction to Be Offered at Smith-Gilbert Gardens

The classes will run from May 14-17.

Contemporary landscape artist John Guernsey will be offering instruction in oil painting at Kennesaw’s Smith-Gilbert Gardens from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday-Friday, May 14-17. This class will give students an opportunity to learn the concepts and secrets of expressive landscape painting amidst the beautiful setting of the spring gardens.  Classes will include studio and outdoor painting time. The four consecutive morning sessions are divided into lecture, demonstration and one-on-one assistance so students will learn how to really ‘see’ and interpret the landscape. John will explain how to use painterly techniques to render beautiful impressionistic ‘plein air’ style paintings. This class is geared towards those who have some oil painting…

Smith-Gilbert Gardens to Host Spring Fashion Show

It is scheduled for May 5.

Smith-Gilbert Gardens is hosting a brunch and fashion show on Sunday, May 5 from 1 to 4 p.m. featuring fashionable attire from Macy's at Town Center in Kennesaw. Models will give guests stylish ideas for both casual and formal spring attire. Just in time for Mother's Day, handbags and perfumes will be available for purchase along with paintings from the plein air competition. Rose Garden Gala in 2 Weeks

It will be held at Smith-Gilbert Gardens.

The 3rd Annual Rose Garden Gala at Smith-Gilbert Gardens will be held Saturday, April 27, 6-10 pm. This fundraiser supports programs like the new Gather ‘n Grow family vegetable garden as well as the care and upkeep of the historic Hiram Butler house and other facility improvements. Guests will have the chance to bid on a variety of silent auction items including Braves tickets, wine, and vacation condo rentals. Smith-Gilbert Gardens Earns New Accreditation

“This represents the acknowledgment of goals specific to public gardens, including tree conservation,” Gardens Executive Director Doug Davis said.

Smith-Gilbert Gardens has been approved for Level II accreditation through the ArbNet Program, it was recently announced by Gardens Executive Director Doug Davis. By achieving particular standards of professional practices deemed important for arboreta and botanic gardens, Smith-Gilbert is now recognized amongst other professional public gardens in the Morton Register of Arboreta. Outdoor Painting Contest at Smith-Gilbert Gardens

The goal is to encourage diverse artistic interpretations of the plant material, sculpture and historic home located at Smith-Gilbert Gardens.

Kennesaw’s Smith-Gilbert Gardens is hosting its fifth plein air, or outdoor, painting competition from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 2-3. This judged competition is an event hosted by the Smith-Gilbert Gardens Foundation. The goal is to encourage diverse artistic interpretations of the plant material, sculpture and historic home located at Smith-Gilbert Gardens. The competition will bring together serious artists that use visual art as a major interpretive medium of the landscape while also raising awareness of the need to protect our environment and encourage a future generation of caretakers of our planet. Veggie Plots Available at Smith-Gilbert Gardens

The cost is $150 per plot.

This spring, families and individuals will have an opportunity to work their own garden plots in the Gather 'n' Grow area in Kennesaw’s Smith-Gilbert Gardens. Along with growing space, participants will receive a seasonal membership to Smith-Gilbert Gardens, seeds, plants, fertilizer, cages, workbook and 10 educational classes. The cost is $150 per plot. More than 30 plots are available on a first-come, first served basis starting in April. The educational classes and one-on-one instruction will be provided by Head Gardener Shon Cameron and SGG Executive Director Doug Davis. Kennesaw Is a Green City

The Atlanta Regional Commission highlighted programs at Smith-Gilbert Gardens and the city's efforts to preserve greenspace.

The Atlanta Regional Commission today recognized Kennesaw and three other metro communities for their ongoing sustainability efforts. It was the second consecutive year that Kennesaw received "Green Communities certification," a designation that is earned "by implementing practices and policies in 10 categories, ranging from energy efficiency and green building to transportation and water efficiency," the ARC this afternoon said in a news release. Last year, Kennesaw achieved bronze certification. This year, it received silver status, which is one level higher. Smith-Gilbert Gardens Accredited

It is now recognized amongst other professional public gardens in the Morton Register of Arboreta.

Smith-Gilbert Gardens has been awarded a Level I Accreditation through the ArbNet Arboretum Accreditation Program and is now recognized amongst other professional public gardens in the Morton Register of Arboreta, a database of 500 tree-focused public gardens. ArbNet is an interactive community that supports professional exchange and collaboration and is sponsored and coordinated by The Morton Arboretum. Smith-Gilbert Gardens received accreditation by achieving particular standards of professional practices deemed important for arboreta and botanic gardens. Pip Performs in Fundraiser at Gardens

The aspiring singer made the top 12 on The Voice singing competition and is now raising funds to help record his first album.

With roses blooming all around him, The Voice contestant and Kennesaw Mountain High School graduate Phillip “Pip” Arnold gave a live acoustic performance Sunday at Smith-Gilbert Gardens. The event, An Evening with Pip, highlighted the local resident's powerful voice that earned him accolades on the nationally-televised show this spring. As a contestant in the competition, Pip placed in the Top 12. However, he did not finish high enough to guarantee a recording contract. The Smith-Gilbert Gardens performance helped raise funds for Pip's Kickstarter Campaign to help fund his debut album. An Evening with Pip

Kennesaw's rising star will give a limited seating performance this Sunday at Smith-Gilbert Gardens.

The Voice contestant and Kennesaw Mountain High School graduate Phillip “Pip” Arnold will give a limited seating live acoustic performance at Smith-Gilbert Gardens this Sunday, June 3, from 6 to 9 p.m. The event, An Evening with Pip, will be an intimate concert under the trees. Tickets cost $50 per person, and seating is limited to 200. Wine, beer, sodas and hors d'oeuvres will be provided. As a contestant in the nationally televised singing competition, Pip placed in the Top 12. However, he did not finish high enough to guarantee a recording contract.
