The Kennesaw Police Department is doing its part to educate residents on gun ownership and safety. Officers will facilitate a gun safety class from 10 a.m. to noon March 9 at the Ben Robertson Community Center, 2753 Watts Dr. "The agenda will consist of ... basic firearms safety and Georgia gun laws," Office Scott Luther said in a news release. "Free gun locks will also be available while supplies last. Please do not bring any firearms or weapons to the class." Registration is required. Click here to register for the class. Kennesaw will host a town-hall meeting at 6 p.m. tonight at the Ben Robertson Community Center. Mayor Mark Mathews will open the meeting with a shortened version of the State of the City address that he delivered at the January Kennesaw Business Association Luncheon. That will be followed by a question-and-answer session with the audience. In addition to Mathews, city manager Steve Kennedy and council members are expected to attend the town-hall meeting, which is scheduled to end at 7:30 p.m.

The Kennesaw City Manager and Public Works Department will hold a public meeting on Thursday, November 8 at 6:30 pm in the Ben Robertson Community Center, 3753 Watts Drive, to address stormwater program management, transportation improvement plans, and a sanitation billing system upgrade. A short presentation will be followed by a question and answer period about each topic to address issues and concerns. The public is encouraged to attend.

The City of Kennesaw is sponsoring a Summer Heroes Community Blood Drive this Tuesday, June 12, from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Ben Robertson Community Center. Most healthy people of at least 17 years of age and at least 110 pounds are eligible to donate blood every 56 days. The donation process from the time you arrive until the time you leave takes about 45 minutes. The donation itself only takes about 8-10 minutes. The city is seeking input from community members on what should be done about a pawn shop that was mistakenly allowed to open up for business at the Mack Dobbs Point strip mall. Kennesaw city officials admit a mistake was made when Cruchelow Jewelry & Loan was allowed to open there this year, despite a 2004 agreement prohibiting pawn shops from the property. Now, city officials are weighing possible solutions to the matter, which has been brought to light by Kennesaw resident Bill Harris.
