Residents in Georgia, Other States Want to Secede from U.S.

The move, which is gathering steam, is being done in the wake of President Obama's re-election.

Residents of Georgia and more than a dozen other states have filed petitions to secede from the United States, according to media reports. Residents of Alabama, New York, Michigan, Texas and other states have filed the petitions under the "We The People" program, featured on the White House website, according to the Huffington Post. The Georgia petition, which already has more than 4,000 signatures, reads in part: "...Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, that whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or abolish it, and institute new Government..." Cobb Sheriff Winning Another Term

The sheriff’s race was one of only a few contested races in Cobb County.

Cobb County Republican Sheriff Neil Warren was winning another term late Tuesday night, seemingly beating Democrat Gregory Gilstrap. Warren led by almost 60 percent with partial precincts reporting. That's the same percentage that Warren beat Gilstrap in 2008. The sheriff’s race was one of only a few contested races in Cobb County. Many elections were decided in the primary. Warren was sworn-in as interim sheriff in December 2003, following the previous sheriff’s resignation. He was first elected as the county’s 42nd sheriff in November 2004. Warren oversees a department where duties include courthouse security, county jail operations and executing criminal warrants. Cobb Voters to Pick School Board Member

In today's elections, residents will have two choices—incumbent Alison Bartlett and Brad Wheeler—for the newly defined Post 7.

There was the vote against the balanced calendar for Cobb schools, then the push to postpone the Harrison High ninth grade center. The two legislative moves by first-term school board member Alison Bartlett have been met with vocal opposition, whether it be from a majority or minority. But the Democrat, who represents Post 7, has always held firm to her decisions, once telling Patch, “I’ve always done what I think is right, (even if it’s) not popular.” Those who disapprove will have the chance to take revenge today as they head to the polls. Meanwhile, supporters will attempt to send her into a second four years. Cobb Election Night Watch Parties

Both major political parties will have public events tonight.

Cobb voters who want to watch tonight's election returns with those of similar partisan tastes will have their own dedicated places to do so. Both major parties will have official watch parties, and the public is invited. The Cobb Republican Party has scheduled a "Victory Party" from 8 p.m. to 12 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Suites Northwest Atlanta, 2999 Windy Hill Road, located at the intersection of Powers Ferry Road. Admission to the event is free, and so are hors d'oeuvres. There will be a cash bar and large-screen televisions to watch returns. UPATE 5:50 pm If you are in line to vote at 7 pm, you will get to vote even though the polls close then. Tens of thousands of Fulton County voters have already cast ballots today. Turnout is especially high for today’s General Election, as it is in most Presidential election years. It's too early to know how this year compares to 2008. In the evening after traditional work hours, peak turnout is anticipated, and tens of thousands of additional voters could exercise their right to vote. Fulton County elections officials released a statement advising that voters who are in line at 7 pm will be allowed to vote under Georgia law. Before You Vote, Check Wait Times

The Cobb Elections website lists wait times at each of the nine advance voting locations.

Since early voting started, various media outlets have reported wait times of at least two hours. Now voters in Cobb have a convenient way to see how long they'll have to stand in line. They can check wait times at all nine advance voting locations through the Cobb County Board of Elections and Registration website, county spokesman Robert Quigley said. The page will be updated four times a day, he said. Advance voting continues through Friday. In North Cobb, residents can vote from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. at NorthStar Church, 3413 Blue Springs Rd.
