Kennesaw has been honored nationally for its health and wellness initiatives. According to city spokeswoman Pam Davis, the National League of Cities recently awarded Kennesaw nine medals for improving access to healthy, affordable food and increasing opportunities for physical activity. Scheduling conflicts have caused the Kennesaw Fit City Finish Line event, which originally was scheduled for Dec. 8, to be postponed. The event was planned to wrap-up the city's Fit City initiative, which promoted a healthy lifestyle through several events and activities, such as 5K road races, Field Day events, the weekly Kennesaw Farmers Market and a See It, Make It, Eat it cooking class. When held, Finish Line event will be a chance for people who joined the program from the beginning to check their progress, as well as an opportunity for interested newcomers to get started. For Bartow County resident Justin Plaskett, participating in Thrive!'s recent 24-day challenge was an opportunity for him to prove to himself that he could do it. "To get my weight under control, I really needed to do it," Plaskett said. "I thought, 'You know what? It’s only 24 days. Let’s see what I can do.' And, I did it." Plaskett lost 18 pounds and 6 1/2 inches in 24 days. "I’m rather pleased with it," Plaskett said. Friday night, approximately 100 people from five Thrive! The city will kick off the Kennesaw Grand Prix series on Saturday with the third annual Swift-Cantrell Classic 5k. Community members of all ages are invited to participate in the event on Saturday, May 12, at 7:30 a.m. in downtown Kennesaw. In addition to the 5k, or 3.1-mile race, there will also be a one-mile family fun walk. Proceeds will benefit the Swift-Cantrell Foundation for capital improvements to Swift-Cantrell Park. The race is the first of six in the Kennesaw Grand Prix series. All events are run on a mostly flat course through downtown Kennesaw and benefit various city facilities and projects. The annual Kennesaw Farmers Market will soon be ripe for the picking. The market opens for business this year on Tuesday, May 1, at the Adams Park soccer field parking lot, located at 2753 Watts Dr. in Kennesaw. The market will then be open every Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., rain or shine, through the end of October. Sponsored by the Kennesaw Downtown Development Authority, the Farmers Market includes a variety of vegetables, fruits, and herbs grown by local farmers, as well as freshly baked breads, cakes and cookies, landscape plants and flowers, craft items, and other assorted goods. “The market is the perfect complement to Kennesaw’s Fit City initiative which encourages health and wellness,” said City Council member and Fit City …

An expected 60,000 to 70,000 visitors will fill the streets of downtown Kennesaw this weekend for the city's 36th annual Big Shanty Festival. Festivities will include an opening parade, a flash mob performance, food vendors, more than 250 booths featuring homemade crafts, and live entertainment on two stages. The Big Shanty Festival is a collaborative effort between the city, the Kennesaw Business Association, JRM Management and an extensive team of individuals, businesses and organizations. This year's festival is presented by Superior Plumbing. As one of north Georgia's largest events, the Big Shanty Festival has grown since its humble beginnings in 1975. This weekend's Fit City event at Swift-Cantrell Park saw residents come out and try Zumba and other activities.
A beautiful spring day was the perfect setting Saturday for the Fit City Field Day event at Swift-Cantrell Park in Kennesaw. Councilwoman Cris Eaton-Welsh spearheaded the Fit City program and was on hand Saturday along with displays from Hybrid Impact, Big Peach Running Company, Advanced Pain and Spine Center and Farmers Market Baskets. Join community members for a free workout at Swift-Cantrell Park.
Need that extra push to get into a steady exercise routine? The City of Kennesaw and Big Peach Running Company are holding a free Fit City Field Day on Saturday at Swift-Cantrell Park featuring 45-minute sample classes from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Community members are invited to stop by the park to try out the Yoga, Zumba, Cross Fit or ClubJam exercise programs. The Field Day is part of the community's larger Fit City initiative, which aims to make Kennesaw the most active city around.
