Join us for the annual History Hustle 5K!
Lace up your running (or walking) shoes and embark on a journey through Cartersville’s rich history. Our unique race course begins at Rose Lawn Museum, the historic Victorian home of renowned evangelist, Rev. Sam P. Jones, and continues through parts of Cartersville’s historic residential districts. This event is open to adults and children.
Our race route is an official USATF-Certified 5K Course! [GA19045WC]
After the race, stay to enjoy the Rose Lawn Arts &amp; Crafts Festival and go visit the Bartow History Museum with free admission with your race t-shirt.
All proceeds from this event will support the educational and preservation efforts of the Bartow History Museum and Rose Lawn Museum.

Local hunger relief group provides snacks for students at Marietta Title 1 schools 

PORCH-Marietta, an all-volunteer nonprofit dedicated to reducing food insecurity, announces its upcoming fundraiser in partnership with Kendra Scott Jewelry. The event is scheduled for Sunday, May 5 from 3-5PM at Kendra Scott Jewelry at The Avenue East Cobb, in time for Mother’s Day and graduation shopping. 
The store will donate 20% of its proceeds to PORCH-Marietta to support their PORCH for Schools program. Through this initiative, PORCH provides healthy snacks for students in local Title 1 schools so they can stay fueled up and ready to learn all day. Hungry students can’t focus on learning, and teachers shouldn’t have to pay for students’ snacks themselves. 
“Every customer who mentions PORCH on 5/5 will make a positive impact on the lives of local students,” said Liz Platner, chapter leader of PORCH-Marietta. “We had funds to support 9 Cobb County and Marietta City schools in January and we hope to raise enough money to provide for these schools again next semester. Together, we can make a significant difference towards reducing food insecurity in our neighborhood." 
Fair Oaks Elementary teacher Carmen Meek commented, “Most of my students are newcomers to this country. These students have very little when they come, and the parents must work very hard to provide them with the things they need. As a teacher it is a blessing to know that the PORCH organization has been so generous, sending healthy and delicious snacks to my students. My students are learning and growing which can make for a long day at school. Many times they need that extra snack to finish their day. They look forward to receiving the snacks. I know their families appreciate it.”
PORCH Communities was started in 2011 in Chapel Hill, and there are now over 550 neighborhoods in 10 states serving their local communities. PORCH chapters have gathered and distributed more than $12.5 million worth of food to neighbors in need. The PORCH-Marietta chapter was founded in February 2022. 
Contributing non-perishable food to 6 local food pantries on a monthly basis is the flagship program of PORCH-Marietta. To date, PORCH-Marietta has donated over 64,000 pounds of food to these pantries. They collect food via monthly neighborhood food drives, based on customized wish lists from the pantries. Neighbors put the requested groceries out on their porch and volunteers pick it up and deliver it to the pantries. Currently there are 50 Marietta neighborhoods participating. About the Atlanta Wind Symphony (AWS)
The Atlanta Wind Symphony is celebrating its 44th season as an all-volunteer community wind ensemble dedicated to delivering inspiring performances of quality wind band literature. Comprised of more than 70 adult musicians ranging in experience from music educators to hobbyists, the group has performed at Carnegie Hall and has received the John Philip Sousa Foundation's Sudler Silver Scroll, North America's most prestigious award for community concert bands. The AWS also received the honor of being selected to perform at the 2021 Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic, the world’s largest instrumental music conference. Atlanta Wind Symphony Music Director David Kehler serves as Director of Bands and Professor of Music at Kennesaw State University where he oversees all aspects of the University’s expanding band program; teaches courses in instrumental conducting, symphonic repertoire, and wind literature; and serves as Music Director and Conductor of the KSU Wind Ensemble. AWS Associate Conductor Chris Shumick is in his 12th year as the Director of Bands at Milton High School, where his bands consistently win top honors at festivals and contests. About the high school concerto competition winner
Grant Peng is a 17-year-old flutist from Atlanta who currently studies under Prof. Angela Jones-Reus. Since beginning flute studies at the age of 11, Grant’s accolades include being the winner of YoungArts National Competition - Classical Music, Pelican International Music Competition for Young Artists, a finalist for the MTNA national auditions, the winner of the Atlanta Flute Club Junior Artist Competition, the two-time winner of Georgia Music Teachers’ Association, and the Samuel Fordis Concerto Competition. Grant currently serves as section leader of the Atlanta Youth Wind Symphony and was first chair for the Georgia All-State Band 2020-2023 and the Atlanta Youth Symphony Orchestra. Grant has also attended various renowned festivals, including the Boston University Tanglewood Institute, Orford Music Academy, and Governor’s Honor Program. Grant is currently a senior at Northview High School, headed to Duke University. Outside of music, Grant is the captain of his school tennis varsity team winning the state championship in 2022.

Atlanta Wind Symphony Concert Features High School Concerto Competition Winner

Join Georgia Philharmonic on an interplanetary musical journey as we conclude the 2023/2024 season with Holst’s groundbreaking work, The Planets, accompanied by video and images from NASA and other leading space agencies. 
Holst was inspired by the importance of the planets in Roman and Greek mythology and ultimately composed a work of seven movements, each of which is named after planet of the solar system and its astrological character. Holst described this work as a “series of mood pictures” each evoking a different idea and emotion: Mars—the destruction of war; Jupiter—jollity and patriotism; Venus—peace; Mercury—fluidity and volatility; Saturn—the wisdom of old age; Neptune—infinity of space; and Uranus—the magic of the cosmos. Used as inspiration for the soundtrack to popular films such as Star Wars, this is a season finale you won’t want to miss!
